To start off with, most people that think they have common sense. Have no common sense at all! I have spent a long time working with and managing people to know this to be true. ;-)
There have been a couple of books written by the name of Common Sense. Thomas Paine's is one of the most recognizable and famous versions. There is another one by Glenn Beck that is not as famous, however has received a lot of great reviews. I would personally recommend everyone to read both of these books. Not to change your beliefs, just to open your minds to other ideas.
This is my philosophy on common sense in general. Most people would say they have common sense, yet, only look at it from their stand point. So if a person who is always gets $100 at Christmas from their company just to say thank you, might believe it makes sense that all companies should do that for each person. For them that makes sense and is reasonable to receive that money year year.
The other side of that coin is not every company can afford to pay that each year. Some companies have a hard time making payroll. Even when times are good, it can be tough for some people. The same thoughts can be applied to a company giving bonuses one year and none for 4 years. Those for years might be spent just not filing for bankruptcy or closing the doors.
Now I am not talking about a company worth Billions and more accountants then the state of Texas! I am talking about, all the local or regional businesses that we as consumers love to visit or work for each and every day.
One view where a lot of people miss the boat in common sense and even a lot of beliefs in general is when they think only of themselves and not the greater good. To determine what is common sense on a topic is somethings subjective and in the eye of the beholder. Those that all have the same train of thought, might agree that a certain path makes common sense. In reality, it might be totally the wrong path and ends up being the worst decision ever!
Common sense is something that some people have or they don't. It's something that some people gain as they get older and learn from their mistakes and errors. For others they never learn. I believe its those that do not open their minds and start looking at tasks not from 1 or 2 sides, they look at it from all sides. Top, bottom, sideways, and even standing on end.
I think what I want people to take away is that, just because your "bff" says its a great idea and your right, does not mean its a great idea and your right! Take a step back and look at the big picture. See whats really important. Oh and listening to others and their ideas, then analyzing the information will get you a long ways.
