Since I was a young boy, may parents encouraged competition, competitiveness and teamwork. They said it would build and mold me into a better person. Competition at the end of the day is good and there has to be winners and losers.
Recently in my small town a new grocery store opened up. It's a Brookshires store and I really like it a lot! Its been a huge success so far and a lot of people have gone there to do their shopping. The convenience for dad and me will be wonderful! There are gas pumps at this store and they sell diesel. (We have 2 diesel trucks, hence the excitement.) This store has a Walmart that is 6 miles down the road and on a major highway. So the new store is working against them for their competition.
With all this being said, they work to make their prices comparable to Walmart's. The main difference is in their diesel and gas prices. They match the low price that Walmart has worked for their price of fuel. Now this is where it really gets good! lol
There are 3 convenience stores in town as well and always have fuel at a higher price then even in Denison. Not any more!!! They have all dropped their prices to meet that of the new store. This is their new competition! And they do not want to lose any more business.
The price difference in some other towns and ours is almost $0.30/ gal a difference. That is how much lower the price is in our prices.
Some will say, that's great until all the stores start going back up in price. I believe and the history does as well show the competition will continue with the new store and Walmart. The competitive prices on fuel has shown to a standard in other towns with the same set up of stores. This is what the free market and competition do for the economy. It helps cost and lowers prices.
I know that some will say it won't last, however, I challenge them to look at Walmart. I know that Walmart uses some strong tactics to negotiate their prices and bring lower cost goods to consumers. Some people do not like Walmart and that is fine (do not shop there). Having stores like that with other stores that are profitable are wonderful for communities. It does drive prices down and consumers are the ones that benefit.
At the end of the day, I have a real problem with people that say they have capitalism. There is a real easy answer why. There is a certain level of greed involved with wanting to make a lot of money. I am ok with that, because I do not want to work for someone that is poor. I want to work for someone that wants to make more money. I also do not want to stop people from making money. Regulations can stifle economic growth. People in Washington are great a making new rules. They tend to lack a desire to revamp the old ones though and get rid of "wasteful" regulations.
