Question Everything

At some point in history society took it upon themselves to stop questioning what they see and hear. A group of people agreed on a topic and started shouting it from the rooftops. Then people just followed along and agreed with those ideas and concepts. It sounded good to them; it seems moral.  This is where the concept of people being sheep comes from in life. Sheep are smart animals, but at the end of the day, they will always follow the crowd and go along with the others. File right into line for feed or slaughter.  Many times, people will fall in line just to get along and not rock the boat. It’s understandable and most get along just fine in life. They get up, go to work, pay bills, and live a happy life. Others are not that lucky. They lose themselves in drugs, alcohol, and dark depths of society. Politics has been around since the dawn of time. There have been rulers, chiefs, kings, then senators, committee members, and presidents. There is a hierarchy in na...

Don't Be a Show Karen

Over the last few years, the phrase Don’t be a Karen has been used to depict people with a certain attitude. For the record, I know and love many Karens who are wonderful people. The phrase has nothing to do with the name, and everything to do with treatment of other human beings. For reference in this article a Karen is not gender specific. This applies to men and women.  Social media is filled with groups for cattle, livestock shows, and events. If you are not part of one of these groups you should join for the entertainment factor alone. Some of the more recent posts include, kids wearing cowboy hats in the ring, do you select your animals to buy based on the judges at major shows, and rants about how someone stood up to another parent for parenting differently than they do.  The comments alone should be played on the big screen so we can all enjoy the responses in comfy chairs with big bags of popcorn. I honestly believe some people post stupid stuff just to st...

The Importance of Losing

Successful people in life do not like to lose. High achievers in all facets of the world will tell you though, they have all lost on their struggle to the top. Most CEO' s of companies will tell you they were fired from at least one job in their life. Michael Jordan will tell you his success only came after numerous failures. Livestock showing is no different and not excluded from this losing philosophy.  It is always great to scroll through social media and see young people being successful. The banners, buckles, and memories being made are priceless. What is not always shown are the ones that don’t get those banners and buckles. It is what many would call, those who lost. I do see those that are super excited for  simply being at the show, or placing 7th out of 24. Those are losses that need to be celebrated. The reason is, they might have been 23rd out of 24th last year. That is progress and the significance of dedication  One concern for many should be tho...

Cheap Can of Biscuits

When growing up my mom didn’t make biscuits from scratch. My dad’s mom could and they were the best. My mom always used canned biscuits and they worked just fine for their purpose. We had biscuits with a lot of different meals. Mom sometimes bought the name brand. To save a penny or two, she would almost always buy the store brand biscuits.  Store brand biscuits are just different.  They don’t always rise as high as name brand. They would sometimes be harder than the named brand, although that might have been the old gas stove we had, who knows.  What I do know is I was very happy with store brand biscuits because I didn’t know the difference.   I use a lot of cheap can biscuits today. They roll out and make great dumplings for a quick chicken and dumpling meal. They make good quick sausage and biscuits, work great for biscuits and gravy, I think you get the point. We like biscuits in our house.  When I was younger, I remember my mom making saus...

The Good Old Days

A dear friend recently posted on social media how he missed the good old days and meant it. I do for sure and for a few reasons. Looking back and fondly remembering happy times in our lives is good. I think it brings smiles to our faces and warmth to our hearts.  When my dad was my age, he had a teenage daughter, 4-year-old son, loving wife, and the whole world ahead of the family. Raising some cattle, keeping the garden tended, working full time, and planning for the future were just a few of the things that kept life interesting.  My dad worked for the telephone company almost all his adult life. He ran lines, climbed poles, and dug ditches in his telephone career. When pagers came out, he was a supervisor and had to carry it all the time. When call forwarding was created, he and one of his buddies had their pagers forwarded to their home phones so he didn’t have to carry the pager anymore.  Dad usually had a company truck to drive and I remember going to hi...

You Lost Your Voice

There are many times we lose our voice. Could be from laryngitis, bad cough, strep throat, or a number of other ailments. For some they don’t talk enough to keep their voice crisp and vibrant. It takes practice to have a good speaking voice using inflection and annunciation correctly.  In life we sometimes feel like we lose our voice at work, in conversations, maybe even with friends and family.  It’s almost like you are not there or worse, your opinion doesn’t matter. Silencing the voices of others is not only wrong, it can be detrimental to people’s health. I actually know some people so sarcastic; they might explode if they don’t let it out. That would be a big mess to clean up.  Then there are people who never say anything. They keep to themselves, only speak positive words, and for the most part keep their opinions to themselves. These people can lose their voice because evidently if you are silent, you agree with everyone else who is speaking louder. Sim...
