It is Just a Show

  In the beginning I was not a watcher or a fan. There was a lot of talk. Chatter online. Then I decided to tune and check out all the hype. There is cattle, ranching, horses, politics, drama, and suspense. This show was a creation from the mind of a very creative horse jockey. The story is well written, the acting is superb, and the raw attitude is what brings people back each week. This show hits an audience that is hungry for real talk, real action, and real results. The bad part is it is all fiction.  The show is full of wrong information. Actions that make no sense. Calves do not jump up and start running immediately after being born. Most cattle ranches don’t take their hands and shoot them off a cliff if their employment has ended. They don’t brand their workers for show of loyalty. There is no such thing as a grade level. There is just life.

            I read a post on social media recently about how there is no such thing as a grade level. In school we always say a child is reading at a 3rd grade level in 2nd grade. That means they are high achievers. Or a kid is reading at a 2nd grade level in 4th grade. They are below the standard and not a high achiever. The idea seems like a good way to standardize the teaching process and make assessments on the kids. I have no problem with children or adults being graded. I have no problems with levels of achievement set forth for people to obtain. Those are the same as goals in life. You set a goal that seems far out and you work to achieve that goal.  Do we teach young people in that manner though? We currently as a nation rank very low in reading, writing, math, and science levels compared to other civilized nations.
