No Simple Fix

Life is not simple. Period end of story. We are always trying to make it simple and easy and more convenient. What happens in the process is we make it more complicated and cumbersome. When problems arise simple actions such as turning off a faucet, closing a door, or turning off the TV can be the fix we need.  I grew up in north central Texas. We had ice storms and snow. It honestly was not that uncommon. Sometimes there were bad storms; whileother times not so difficult.  Our process was the same, thaw hoses, break ice, and feed cattle. The recent polar vortex storm was a little different. There were a lot of factors that complicated this storm, with the main one being how long it lasted. The power grid in Texas could not handle the load of power demand. The governing body of the group that controls the power grid in Texas decided blackouts and outages were the way to fix the issue. There are a lot of factors that complicated this process. The ERCOT board failed ...

The Queso Patron

I am a huge proponent of the first amendment to the US Constitution, free speech. I also happen to be one of the minorities that believes all speech is protected, even if you call it hate speech. One of the reasons the founding fathers put this into the constitution is because without it, and the second amendment, we would not be a free society. We all can agree some language is extremely unimportant and adds no value to the conversation.  With the dawn of the internet, people have become braver in what they write. They say things to individuals that they would never say in public. Last year many people claimed, if you didn’t speak out you are against us. Many also posted, if you don’t vote with us, you are against us. Both of these arguments are childish responses and negates the opinion and ideas of the people they are directed towards. It actually takes that person’s voice away. We should do everything to open up debate and not shut it down.  Dad and I went to o...

Raising a Parent

There is an old joke, it is hard to raise a parent - something I know I have joked about with my dad. The dynamics of households have changed over the years. It is becoming more and more accustomed to have parents move in with their children later in life. For me and my dad, it was how the chips fell in our life. I would not have it any other way.  My dad recently turned 88 and things are not what they used to be for him. He now lives in town, he has hearing aids, and he is a little slower than he used to be in life. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with any of that and I hope that I can reach that point in my life one day. I hope we all do.  The pandemic was rough on many people. Trips to the doctors’ offices are different than before, with required sitting in your vehicle until they are ready for you. If you have to go to the hospital for anything, it is one person at a time. Sometimes no visitors at all if they even think you have covid.  The worst part of ...

They all came Tumbling Down

When businesses are ran poorly, they fail. They can file bankruptcy and restructure or they can pay all debts and close the doors. Many people who close shop lost everything this last year.  Their house, cars, and savings. Some people will rebuild bigger and better than before.  Right now thousands of small businesses have closed their doors permanently. The government didn't help. They argued for 10 months and then sent money overseas.  The government did help banks in 2008. Those banks should have been allowed to fail and restructure. The only thing we got out of the bank bailouts was more regulations and more debt. What is happening in the stock market is the same. These hedge funds who can't cover their margins, need to fail. The billionaires who have short sold businesses into despair for the sole purpose of making money had the tables turned this week. Government and big tech rushed in to save their billionaire friends. If we let them fail like they shou...
