When growing up my mom didn’t make biscuits from scratch. My dad’s mom could and they were the best. My mom always used canned biscuits and they worked just fine for their purpose. We had biscuits with a lot of different meals. Mom sometimes bought the name brand. To save a penny or two, she would almost always buy the store brand biscuits.
Store brand biscuits are just different. They don’t always rise as high as name brand. They would sometimes be harder than the named brand, although that might have been the old gas stove we had, who knows. What I do know is I was very happy with store brand biscuits because I didn’t know the difference.
I use a lot of cheap can biscuits today. They roll out and make great dumplings for a quick chicken and dumpling meal. They make good quick sausage and biscuits, work great for biscuits and gravy, I think you get the point. We like biscuits in our house.
When I was younger, I remember my mom making sausage and biscuits in the morning before we headed out on a trip. Going to a stock show or wherever the destination might have been. Those cheap Can biscuits with sausage came in handy when I got older. I would be hungry for a snack and run grab one or two that were left.
My family didn’t spend a lot of money on fast food. We carried our own lunch meat and sandwich stuff to eat on at the shows. Nothing unusual for us to back up under a tree and gather with the group to eat. We didn’t always demand to go to McDonald’s or Whataburger for a meal or snack. We would prepare for the show.
As I got older, we traveled a lot and went to a lot of shows. Dad and I would leave out and my mom and sister would come later. We still had sandwich stuff in the cooler, drinks to drink, and some cookies to snack on. We were prepared for our trips.
Today’s world has us all going in 10 different directions. I still walk by stalls in show barns and see snack boxes where you can dig and find something to tide you over. I still see people making sandwiches. It can cost up to $40 to get food for a family of 4 at a fast-food joint. For that same $40 the same family can have sandwiches, snacks, and food for a couple of days (depending on how many teenage boys are involved, we all know they are bottomless pits).
What does all this mean? It means that no matter what happens. A cheap can of biscuits can create as many memories and feel-good emotions, as the best meal atop the tallest tower. It means that just because some people are more thrifty with their money, their savings can maybe help them afford the next show.
It means more time being together with your family - more times to laugh with each other. This is important because there will be a time in your life, when you wish you could have it all back with that cheap can of biscuits. As you walk through the barn of life, be sure to appreciate what you have, and may you find comfort in whatever is your ‘cheap can of biscuits’.
