Mothers Day

Holidays are celebrated differently through out the world.  For instance Santa Clause has a different meaning in Holland then what it means in the U.S. Mothers Day is celebrated on a different day of the week in Holland, yet has the same basic meaning.  This is not to talk about Holland. This is to talk about mothers.

My mother was the type of person who would always cuddle and console you when you needed that attention.  She was also the type that would kick your ass when it needed it as well.  My mother grew up in the oil fields of Odessa, TX. My grandfather was a wildcatter and my mother and her brother grew up a good part of their childhood out west.  My mother had the pleasure of living in a few different places before settling with my father.  She graduated high school in Houston then spent a lot of time in Fort Worth and in Perryton, TX.

Mom was the type of person that could be knee deep in mud from working cows or in her garden. That night though she could clean up and shine like a new penny charming friends and laughing that unforgettable laugh.  She was one of the strongest people I have ever met. She could endure a lot and did carry a lot on her broad shoulders. I remember when I was a kid. Something had happened and I was crying. She said, you can cry over this all you want.  That will not change the fact that you are giving that person the satisfaction that they affected you that much. Do you want them to know they won and have that power over you?  Great words that have stuck with me for years.

Holidays are in my opinion a time for family and friends. Family does not have to be blood relations.  Growing up in the wonderful world of cattle. I had so many stock show moms that I could go to at any time and ask for something and they would help. They are people that grew to be life long friends and companions. Their kids and I are still friends and I now get the cherish the sight of seeing their kids grow up and show.

Being a mother is not easy. Especially if you have more then one child. My mother made the choice to work after having both of her children.  She loved to work and like many people was able to make a better life for her family with her working full time.  She always made sure though that we had a hot meal at suppertime and all of our needs were met.  She taught my sister and me how to cook, clean and even do laundry. She made sure that we both were self sufficient people that did not always have to rely on others.  (My Dad did the same thing for us both my sister and me. That we will discuss in future blogs.)

My mother was a kind and giving person who mastered the art of telling someone to kiss her ass without even saying those words. At times she was a high riding hard nosed bitch that did not take any crap off anyone. I thank God everyday she was that person. By having that sort of vigor and courage she really set my sister and me up to be hopefully really good adults. I know that my sister and I use to cuss our parents for giving us a work ethic sometimes. People always knew we could do the job and get it done right.

One thing I had the pleasure to see was the true mothering ability that she passed onto my sister. She gave my sister the insight and wisdom to make a marriage work and juggle two young boys that time has proven them to be more then a handful.  She gave me courage to know that I can do anything that I set my mind too.  She blessed me with a quick whit and a smart ass mouth that comes in handy a lot!

My mothers birthday is in May. It was actually the day after her mothers birthday. Which is a little ironic since my sisters birthday is actually the same day as my dad's.  So we use to always combine one nice gift for mom for her birthday and mothers day. Dad always made sure we had something for her, even if it was handmade or a simple card. Those are always the items she cherished the most.

So what I want everyone to know or to take away from this post. No matter what relationship you had with your mother good or bad. You learn something from them at the end of the day. You either learn the right way to go about a task or what to never do. Learning from mistakes is a part of life. We as humans need to pay attention and always take something positive away from every situation. It allows us to grow and be better people when we look at thinks in a positive light.  That is also a great lesson that my mother taught me.

Whether your mother is still alive or gone on to be an angle above, always remember that there are important life lessons that your mother teaches you and you will always carry.  I think about, pray for and miss my mother everyday since her passing. I do the same for my sister who was a mother as well and like my mother is now an angle up above.

All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother. ~ Abraham Lincoln

My mother was the most beautiful woman I ever saw. All I am I owe to my mother. I attribute all my success in life to the moral, intellectual and physical education I received from her. ~ George Washington

  1. I think I took it harder when your mom passed than when my own passed. That is a testament to how special you were to me and still are.

  2. This article is a testament to your Mother. Jeremy I am one proud stock show mom to have known you and your family. God really blessed us with our stock show families. I don't know if this will happen for the grandkid generation. Seems as though they haven't met special friends yet. Maybe because of iphones and ipods. Will never forget the day we met in Ft. Worth, Jess just walked right up and starting criticizing Craigs clipping and telling him how it was to be done. Your Mom raised one eyebrow,, like she could and Maurice just laughed and smiled that beautiful smile of his. God stalled us across the isle from each other that year. Love you all so much!

You are a special kind of stupid aren't you?

I started this post the other day and it was titled something else and decided to change it since people never cease to amaze me. I know a lot of people. They either worked with me, were one of my employees when I managed people, or friends and family.  I like to follow a wide variety of people on my twitter account.  I think it's important to get a well rounded idea of what people think and believe.      There are some horrific tragedies that have occurred in our country.   They are tragedies that we have seen in the past and will continue to see in the future.  We as Americans come together and support each other, we provide support, food, money, and a prayer.  All are important to the process of rebuilding their lives that have been destroyed.      Theordore Rosevelt was fond of the West African Proverb "Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far." Pretty good saying in my book. ...

Clean your Windshield

It’s that time of year where people will have the “new year, new me” phrase going strong. For many that will last about 2-3 weeks.  For others they will last well into mid-year. I am of the philosophy that you should make changes immediately in life. If you need to start eating healthier then go to the cupboard and fridge and throw out all unhealthy food. If you are going to stop drinking, throw out all your booze. (Rest a sure this will not happen in my house.) If you are going to start working harder on your livestock, turn off your phones and get to the barn. If you are going to sit back and re-evaluate your life while planning for new adventures, sit down and make a list. Every one of these goals requires you to clean your windshield to see what is ahead of you.  As we go down the highway of life we have a big broad windshield in front of us. We can see great distances and have great hopes of what I'd to come in our lives. In-order to see down that road, you must clea...

It is Just a Show

In the beginning I was not a watcher or a fan. There was a lot of talk. Chatter online. Then I decided to tune and check out all the hype. There is cattle, ranching, horses, politics, drama, and suspense. This show was a creation from the mind of a very creative horse jockey. The story is well written, the acting is superb, and the raw attitude is what brings people back each week. This show hits an audience that is hungry for real talk, real action, and real results. The bad part is it is all fiction.  The show is full of wrong information. Actions that make no sense. Calves do not jump up and start running immediately after being born. Most cattle ranches don’t take their hands and shoot them off a cliff if their employment has ended. They don’t brand their workers for show of loyalty. The good news is it is all fiction.  The characters in the show are people you either love or hate. They are characters that bring a lot of talent to the show. These people come from ma...
