Everyone has their own definition of Patriotism. It can have a different meaning for many people and for many different reasons. I think it's a good thing that everyone sees their own version of patriotism. I also believe it is important to know the history behind it and what it really means in The United States of America.
Most people will be grilling hot dogs and burgers. Chowing down on coleslaw, potato salad, and chips. Others will be with friends and family doing a number of outdoor activities. Most people I know will be traveling to or from a cattle show or event. Any of these are wonderful ways to spend the Forth of July weekend.
The 4th celebrates the signing of the Declaration of Independence. There is a link HERE to let you read the Declaration if you have not before, which I encourage everyone to do at least once in their life. The simplicity of the document is very powerful. The writers and signers understood that allowing the people to decide what is best for them will make them a better nation. It will allow these United States to prosper and always stand above all others.
There are MANY benefits this country has seen to being a free capitalistic society and most Americans are full of patriotism. When I travel across the state and nation I see American Flags flying high and proud at many stops. There are posts of Parades, festivals, and re-enactments of historic events all over social media. The United States of America has always been a very patriotic country. People have always been proud of where they came from and where they live.
Patriotism is something that is not just shown on the 4th of July. It is something shown everyday, year around. People are patriotic when they help their neighbors that have cows out. They are patriotic when they spend time with the older generation learning and listening from their stories. They are patriotic when they support our veterans and help pay tribute to those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice. We see patriotism in our everyday lives and that is the greatest part of our country. This also is one of the greatest aspects of human nature.
When scrolling through social media, there a lot of meme's. These are pictures or a brief statement depicting what is going on in life at any given moment. They can be funny, sarcastic, serious or all the above. MEME is also a computer abbreviation that stands for Multitasking Extensible Messaging Environment. So this seems to be a pretty good use of the word. We will see MANY of these meme's this holiday weekend. There are entire pages on social media dedicated to nothing but meme's. I think this is a cute fun way to communicate a feeling or idea at any given time.
Now you might be asking what this has to do with patriotism. Simply put, could you imagine if George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, or Abraham Lincoln had the internet, or use of meme's? What if they had social media and twitter? The outcome of our country would not be very different I dare say, we would have a lot more documentation. George Bernard Shaw said "If history repeats itself, and the unexpected always happens, how incapable must Man be of learning from experience."
It's a little scary to think that we can control what history people see and learn. I remember even from my school days, we saw the point of view of history, from that of the book we read or the teacher. Not necessarily a non-biased point of view. I remember having one teacher in particular who when to liberal schools and was very different in his tone towards certain historical events versus other teachers. Thank GOD we live in a country where we can have those different views and opinions. Thank GOD we are not limited in where we can get our information.
Every young person in this country should take local, state, and U.S. history. They should go to museums, read historical documents and be tested over what they learn. There are many sides to history and I believe everyone should be shown all sides of history. This allows for a better understanding. Once any American sees all the sacrifices people have made throughout history, they will know patriotism.
Thank you to one of our founding fathers, John Adams, we celebrate the signing of the Deceleration of Independence with fireworks. It was a way to celebrate an historic event in 1776. Today it is a way to continue that celebration of our great Nation. It is a way to share our patriotism. It is also a way to continue on a long standing tradition in our country.
As we all go forth on this wonderful holiday. We should all be proud patriots. The country we live in allows us to do, be and become anything we want. Thanks to all the brave men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Thanks to the hard working men and women in law enforcement that work to protect us day in and day out. And finally thank you to our founding fathers. Without their fore thought we would not be living in the greatest country on earth.
