Conscience

Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines conscience as the following:

: the part of the mind that makes you aware of your actions as being either morally right or wrong.

: a feeling that something you have done is morally wrong

We all have this built into us as humans. I believe animals have it built in as well.  In farm animals we all know that there is an inherent conscience.  Mothers of young always protect and do whats right by their young.  Males protect their territory or environment.  They reproduce and continue the cycle of life in their herds.  For cattle people we all know and have that one cow that is lead of the herd or pasture.  She is the Matriarch of the Herd.  In a way she guides the herd and helps lead the way.

Nature and god has structured people in the same dynamic.  Now granted we have all known women to be like the preying mantis.  Mate and bite the head off of the male.  This is actually very common in the human species.

We tend to all have roles in society and nature.  The household has roles and no matter what you think of those roles, they work.  It creates a structure that children can follow and grow up with as a constant in their life.  They know that on Saturday, they are probably going to get up and go to a cattle show.  Or they are going to a LED or judging contest.  Those are GREAT constants in any kids life.

The structure that has created the wonderful creatures and events in nature are the same ones that guide humans.  There is one item that ties every human and animal together.  They have, or appear to have, a conscience.  Something inside of them that tells them what is right or wrong.  This conscience helps guides them in the path of doing right be others.

Knowing what is right or wrong are the basic concepts of being human and should guide us all in life.  When we are young these concepts are instilled into us and we learn from our surroundings. People that have influence include Parents, Teachers, Coaches, Ag Teachers, and 4-H Leaders.  The influence guides us to know what is right or wrong.  Influences can also come from many other places such as church or after school groups.  We have run into a problem though in this country that allows children to learn right or wrong from bad influences.

Children who do not have proper adult supervision will tend to fall to the wayside.  Children who are allowed to do whatever they want without consequences do not learn right from wrong.  Our conscience is an inherit trait.  We grow up with all these different influences and some never learn that it is wrong to steal, destroy what is not theirs, and never accept responsibility.

There is an old saying that trouble is right around the corner.  That is true in every town, in every state in this great country.  If you allow your kids to hang around areas where there are drugs, alcohol, bad influences.  The good news is that gov statistics show a decline in drug use in school kids.  The bad news is, we have kids that are addicted their phones, games and computers.  The other bad news is so are we as adults.

Working, earning a living or supporting your family via a computer, or electronics is nothing to be ashamed of and is commendable.  Texting in your SUV while you are driving your kids is not commendable.  It sets a bad example.  I know people do this because I look at the cars beside me driving and MOST have a phone in their hands.  It's Sad.

I sometimes wonder if anyone in D.C. has a conscience left.  There is a TON of corruption in our government.  Not one person can explain to me why congressman or women should spend 20+ years in D.C.  Most of these people are millionaires and only a handful can be found giving back to their community.  It's crazy that its mainly the ones that were Dr's are the ones that do the best.  Rand Paul does free surgeries when they are not in session and another dentist works on people from lower incomes at no cost.  These are examples of giving back to the community.

I am a big believer in our country and the people that live here and make it a great place to live.  The one item that disheartens me is how some people loose sight or understanding that other peoples opinions matter.  Others voice and ideas matter as well.  This is something that reaches across all parties in the political spectrum.

It's amazing that when I turn on the TV there were people physically destroying property, burning cars and creating havoc.  I don't believe that is the normal and that most people in our country want to do good.  On the flip side I do believe that when "Hollywood Types" start speaking as if they are one of us I laugh.  It's the same when I look at a lot of people in D.C.  They do not know the struggles of living paycheck to paycheck.  They do not know the struggle of getting that new set of tires.  They do not know the struggles of looking for a better paying job to make a better life.

Those are the people that revolted and rose up to elect the current POTUS.  Some believe that the first mid term election will change the tides.  History tells us there is a good chance of that happening.  I believe that most people in this country have a conscience and they know whats right or wrong.  I also believe that the standard Republican vs Democrat election is over.  You will see more everyday people starting to organize and run for office. You will see a rise up in more common folk speaking their minds.

I have put it out there before and I will do it again.  No one cares who you marry, they don't care where you pee.  They even don't mind people coming into this country to start a better life.  Agriculture people know the importance of migrant workers.  What people don't like are free loaders.  People who do nothing and get everything.  This is for all people.  We have a country where there are less people in the work force than not working.  That trend has to change.  We have to put people to work in better paying jobs.

Some people might find their conscience at ease when they give to a charity or drop money in a homeless persons cup.  They make themselves feel better by buying a $6 cup of coffee for the person behind them by "paying it forward".  They of course have to post about it on social media.  It's time everyone understands that right and wrong does not come from only what we see, it comes from what others see.  I have no problem with people doing random acts of kindness.  I am more inclined to hear of people feeding the homeless, spending time with elderly in nursing homes, or helping our veterans.  Morality is based on a general consensus of a community (In so many words).

I guess what all this babble means to me is that I don't try to look moral or try to look like I have a conscience.  The way we live our life, the way we act on a daily basis should show others who we really are in life.  I have a lot of friends that are liberal and a lot that are conservative.  The beauty about our country is I don't have to believe what someone else does or even agree.  I have the right to voice my opinion.  I also have the right to not say a word.

What problem we have is that in the last number of years.  Really since the 90's and maybe even before that time.  The government or media tells us what we should and should not be doing.  The government is not our conscience as a society.  The government does not determine morality.  There has been A LOT of focus on small portions of our society.  We have not focused on people that pick up the trash, the people that fix our leaking toilets, the people that mow our lawns.  We have also not focused on the people that feed our country.  We have not focused on those that PROTECT our country.

These are the people that are the backbone of our country.  These are the ones that will continue to have a demand and need no matter how new your phone is, how fast your order delivers, or how much your new home costs.

Drifting away from a society that looks our for communities as a whole versus in sections is a dangerous path.  We are down that path now.  We are not too far that we cannot make corrections. We need to put down our phones and start looking at the larger picture in our country.

It is by the goodness of God that in our country we have those three unspeakably precious things: freedom of speech, freedom of conscience, and the prudence never to practice either of them.

You are a special kind of stupid aren't you?

I started this post the other day and it was titled something else and decided to change it since people never cease to amaze me. I know a lot of people. They either worked with me, were one of my employees when I managed people, or friends and family.  I like to follow a wide variety of people on my twitter account.  I think it's important to get a well rounded idea of what people think and believe.      There are some horrific tragedies that have occurred in our country.   They are tragedies that we have seen in the past and will continue to see in the future.  We as Americans come together and support each other, we provide support, food, money, and a prayer.  All are important to the process of rebuilding their lives that have been destroyed.      Theordore Rosevelt was fond of the West African Proverb "Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far." Pretty good saying in my book. ...

Clean your Windshield

It’s that time of year where people will have the “new year, new me” phrase going strong. For many that will last about 2-3 weeks.  For others they will last well into mid-year. I am of the philosophy that you should make changes immediately in life. If you need to start eating healthier then go to the cupboard and fridge and throw out all unhealthy food. If you are going to stop drinking, throw out all your booze. (Rest a sure this will not happen in my house.) If you are going to start working harder on your livestock, turn off your phones and get to the barn. If you are going to sit back and re-evaluate your life while planning for new adventures, sit down and make a list. Every one of these goals requires you to clean your windshield to see what is ahead of you.  As we go down the highway of life we have a big broad windshield in front of us. We can see great distances and have great hopes of what I'd to come in our lives. In-order to see down that road, you must clea...

It is Just a Show

In the beginning I was not a watcher or a fan. There was a lot of talk. Chatter online. Then I decided to tune and check out all the hype. There is cattle, ranching, horses, politics, drama, and suspense. This show was a creation from the mind of a very creative horse jockey. The story is well written, the acting is superb, and the raw attitude is what brings people back each week. This show hits an audience that is hungry for real talk, real action, and real results. The bad part is it is all fiction.  The show is full of wrong information. Actions that make no sense. Calves do not jump up and start running immediately after being born. Most cattle ranches don’t take their hands and shoot them off a cliff if their employment has ended. They don’t brand their workers for show of loyalty. The good news is it is all fiction.  The characters in the show are people you either love or hate. They are characters that bring a lot of talent to the show. These people come from ma...
