Auld Lang Syne......

As one year ends and another begins, many people feel like a new start in life. They feel like the get a "do over". I like this philosophy and out look.  I believe that we should all hope to be better people.  We should want our lives to be more in the future.   The one problem is hesitate to make difficult changes in our daily lives that allow that true fresh start.

Making New Years resolutions have never been one of my strong suits.  My philosophy is when you decide you need to make a change in your life.  You make that change immediately.  If you want to start eating healthier.  The best option is to throw out all the bad food and just buy foods that are better for you.  If you want to start exercising, you need to start a set time the next day.  Too many times we say, oh I will wait until I eat all the food I have or I will start next week at the gym.  Small changes we do each day and repeat lead to bigger and better changes down the road.

I love this time of year all around.  The holidays are a special time in life.  We get to celebrate the birth of our savior.  We spend time with friends and family.  This time of year allows people to give a little bit more to others.  Dad and I don't have a lot in life.  We are not very extravagant people.  We did not even own a flat screen TV until last Christmas.  We were okay with that as well.  We do not have to have the latest and greatest cars or trucks.  We shop at garage sales and thrift stores.  We love every bit of our lives.

At a recent Christmas gathering Dad and I learned someone close to us was going through a very rough time.  We had no idea what had been going on with this individual.  The next day without hesitation Dad said we need to do something to help them out in their time of need.  His words have stuck with me, "This is not the time to turn our back on them, we need to support them and build them up."   The words almost brought tears to my eyes.

This was a very special moment for me. At that very moment I understood that he has done the exact same act of kindness for me on multiple occasions.  He has more than once stepped in and helped me out even when I never asked.  He knew I needed something and he was there to provide.  I also realized that a number of my friends have done this as well.  At the end of the day, I my self have also stepped in to assist someone and never thought twice about it.  I knew they needed help and I provided the help they needed.  These acts are all done on an unconscious level.   It's what makes us human.

One of the best reasons I love this time of year is that people from all genres come together in countries across the world to celebrate Christmas and the New Year. Celebrations happen from the summer time of Sydney, to the snow drifts of Montana.  When so many people agree on events in our lives on this grand scale, it should show that anything is possible.  It should put our lives into perspective by showing us what is important.  Many people have reasons to hate this time of year or not want to celebrate.  I will not list all of the ones I believe are not relevant. That will be a later blog to piss off the right people.

I will keep this blog short, I know that most of you want to either get drunk "er" or sober up, depending on when you read this post.  Let me leave you with this last piece of wisdom and something to ponder.  If you do not have a friend or a family member that works on holidays.  If you do not even know someone that works on a Sunday.  You are missing the point of life.  Farmers, Ranchers, Police, Doctors, Nurses and even Gas Station Attendants spend NUMEROUS hours at work in all ours of the day.  They work in all elements of weather and many in dangerous situations.   Just because there is 4 foot of snow on the ground, cattle, hogs, sheep, goats, and chickens still have to be fed and tended too. These are the people that make the world go around.  Without these people, we would not survive.  Every day of our lives we should stop and thank those people for what they do for us.

As you go forward in the New Year. Please remember these two quotes.  I believe they go hand in hand in life.

"Don't go around saying the world owes you a living. The world owes you nothing. It was here first." ~Mark Twain

"I walk slowly, but I never walk backward." ~Abraham Lincoln
