The Holidays in our great country can be a wonderful time of year. Christmas lights, trees, food, friends, family and of course, food. People choose to spend time with family, friends or at events. There is normally laughter, joy and sometimes tears. This time of year is loved by many and hated by others.
Choosing how you spend your time during the holidays is your choice. If you decide to take a trip, then enjoy every minute. If you decide friends and people you care for are in order, then please indulge and enjoy every minute. If you decide it is strictly family, remember, the liquor stores are there for you.
People also tend to congregate in masses to shop for all sorts of items. They go from store to store on a strict time table to get the must have items for the year. I say if you want to go spend money, then go spend money. If you want to stay home and veg, by all means, put on those sweat pants and relax.
Our country has historically been the innovators. We lead the pack in changing the way the world looks at itself and others. Internet, wireless, cars, trains and even planes. Americans always want the next best thing out on the market. Part of that desire goes with our success as a country. We never seem to settle for second best in life. We also allow people to make a lot of money in perusing their endeavors. I have blogged before about the Americans who came from nothing to make a fortune. One that still sticks with me is Steve Jobs. The recent movie about him I do not think did so well at the box office. I will wait for it to come out on TV. People are still buying products he helped design. People buy them in the thousands and no one seems to say a word about all the money he made in his life.
No matter what your choices are in the season. Please always remember there are people out there in this country that have nothing. They have no family, not many friends or they are older and just struggle from day to day. We need to be sure to help these people through out the year. We need to make sure they have what they need all the time and not just the holidays. Veterans tend to be very vulnerable to depression this time of year.
We need to always give thanks no matter if it's the Holidays. We need to thank people for holding doors open. We need to thank people who pay us compliments. We also need to thank our parents, friends and loved ones every chance we get. Those closest to us tend to do more than we will ever know.
There are going to be (have been) a lot of posts on social media about how unfair it is for stores to be open and not let their workers be off to spend time with their families. THAT IS A LOAD OF CROCK!!! We are all in charge of our destiny. We choose jobs and professions that ask us to perform tasks we may not always be happy to perform. It is their job so they do it daily.
Most of the people I have seen at some stores have been there for years. One big box store has years of service on their vests. Many have 20+ years of experience in these stores.
My dad worked for the telephone company for many years. He was always on call at Holiday time. Even as a supervisor he might get called for an emergency or issue. Nurses and Dr's cover the hospitals. Electricians are also there when power issues happen. I know that everyone is thankful for those people. What makes one better than the other? If a Dr or nurse is good enough to work on a holiday. I am pretty sure a cashier or store clerk is good enough to work as well.
So as you stuff your faces and look for the last nibble of turkey. Please remember there is a lot to be thankful for each day. We need to use the words Thank You, Yes Sir, Yes Ma'am each and every day. You also need to remember what you are thankful for daily. This will help those bad days turn into not so bad days. I come home to a dad that loves me and and furry friend that is always glad to see me at the door.
If you have a roof over your head, clothes on your back, and something to eat you are richer than many people. If you know of someone that does not have any of these they are the ones in need. So on this holiday of Thanksgiving. Remember to actually give thanks.
