When I was growing up, my Mom and Dad would listen to WBAP. Paul Harvey was a great story telling and radio personality. Mom loved to listen to him the most. Since she was in charge of being my personal chauffeur, we listened to Mr. Harvey a lot.
Growing up with older parents and even a sibling so much older gave me a different perspective on life. We did not go to fast food restaurants. We did not hang out at the mall that often. We did go to good dinning establishments with cloth napkins. We tipped well to those that deserved it and were always polite to people in public.
As I got older I realized that these small events were huge impacts on my life. It taught me how to act, and how to treat others. Always with respect.
As dad and I head down the road on our adventures, it gives me time to reflect and ponder. Dreams are a big part of life. I am of the school of thought that dreams are attainable. People tend to not understand their path to success. The path can be entirely different than what we imagined. We all need guidance and assistance along the way. Asking for that help is hard to do and giving can be so easy.
The biggest lesson I learned growing up was to give back and help others. There is a huge list of people that helped in my life. I hope that list keeps growing. Through the FFA and 4H there are tons of avenues to gain assistance. Cattle and registered livestock associations are also a great resource.
Some people live in areas where their passion is with horses, cattle or hogs while they have 4H or FFA leaders who specialize in goats. (Just an example) Our Ag teachers and County Agents work hard to take care of their kids and their departments. It takes the other leaders in the community and area to make it all work. It is okay that not all leaders know everything about every species. There does need to be support though to get students that assistance needed.
Setting goals and having a passion in life is important. It helps give our lives meaning and purpose. When we set goals we have an idea how we will get to the end point. What we don't always plan on are the bumps in the road. Those bumps are what make us the great people we are. We can choose to look at each bump as a devastating effect or we can look at it as a learning opportunity.
These bumps are just a temporary set back. Everyone has felt defeated or failed at a task. We have all had to pull ourselves up by our boot straps. Whatever happens, you will go on and you will move forward.
Being successful is in part understanding that each day is a new day. You have to work towards making the next day better than the last. You have to learn from your mistakes. You have to keep an eye on your goals. Life happens to us all. If all paths to success was crystal clear, we would all be the top of our game. Success in my book is when bad days knock you down, you get up and say, "Is that all you have?"
When you look back on their life most will not say, "That happened exactly like I planned." Most will say, it was a hell of a ride. What I love about life is that it is unpredictable to a point. Working hard everyday will bring success. Failure is inevitable in life, we learn from those failures and move forward.
For me when I hear the name Paul Harvey, it brings me memories of my family. It also reminds me that there is always more to the story. The stories that Paul Harvey told were funny, sad and educational. They taught us a lesson. One of those lessons that sticks with me today, is that we can control our lives to a point. We might not always like those bumps in the road, the journey should always be worth it.
Every pessimist who ever lived has been buried in an unmarked grave. Tomorrow has always been better than today, and it always will be. ~ Paul Harvey
